Stories, opinions, and shining light on shared experiences.

  • I will be interviewing and telling stories of the people who inspire me, challenge me, and make me think in a different way. Everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and safe while sharing their truth. I want to approach every interview and story with intention, empathy, and create a space people can tell their story without judgement.

In the city of creatives, an Instagram was created and now expanding into group gatherings within local businesses around Detroit, Michigan, Kris Prasiloski (she/they), 25, creator of Divas With Ideas, says they are “doing this with love for herself,” but overall for the love of their community and to show people that anyone can have ideas and make those ideas come true.

Truly a diva with very passionate ideas, Prasiloski is on the journey of creating a powerful and inspiring community organization, Divas With Ideas. They share that this organization will mainly be based in the city of Detroit and the mission of Divas With Ideas: “committed to providing an accessible platform and network for diverse community-oriented individuals to connect with each other, to develop their personal and professional skills, and to be a catalyst for their success. The business will do this through partnership with community-focused individuals and businesses who are also passionate about supporting the development and success of other community-oriented Black, Brown, Indigenous, queer, non-binary, femme, and transgender people. Together we will host events, workshops, and create podcasts that provide more visibility, marketing, and genuine connections for all involved in collaboration with us.”

I had the opportunity to sit down with Prasiloski in their home office and to ask some questions about the events that lead up to create Diva’s With Ideas. I could see the passion in the way they talked, their eyes lit up as they would tell me the timeline of events.

Prasiloski and I talked about their younger years, learning how aspirations had been forming from a young age. Prasiloski, “cares deeply about their hometown,” however explaining, moving to Detroit gave them the opportunity to find like-minded individuals to support and help make all of their dreams reality. Working hard and joining organizations throughout grade school, most being in musical arts and social science related activities. Prasiloski knew there was an idea brewing during her time in grade school. They explained the original dream to me, “some sort of community center, and there will be a library, and a coffee shop, and there are resources and free space for people to be in and just exist in a safe space.”

With their big dreams, Prasiloski would not give up. They began their associates degree undecided of what they need to make the dream a reality. Finding their path in Social Work was how it all began. Now, with a Masters in Social Work while working a full time job with Best Buy Health, Prasiloski is doing it all and has hosted multiple events for Divas With Ideas to support community needs.

Finally dreams began to come to life through the events that were hosted. Divas With Ideas hosted a clothing swap that welcomed all. It was free to take and leave old clothes. All of the leftover clothes were donated. Next, they hosted a collage even, also free, where the community came together and had inspiration beside them while creating art. From the input of those events, Prasiloski expanded events to local businesses in Detroit. Summer Town Fresh Bar gave them the opportunity to host a donation-based event. This event, The Tool Box Brunch, gathered people in the community to come and share a skill with others. They mentioned to me that the skills shared were mostly in arts and social sciences. The proceeds from The Tool Box Brunch went to supporting two local Diva DJs who performed at the event. From there, Divas With Ideas has held two other free events to build community and one mutual aid event partnered with Kiss More Sapphics and Planned Parenthood.

In the next few months, Prasiloski wants to take a step back and reevaluate. They want to see what the current effects are; the who, what, where, when, and why are of what is missing in the queer and BIPOC community in Detroit, Michigan, after hosting these events. They also want to find people to support them within the organization. Prasiloski mentions wanting to be sure they are not overwhelming themselves so they can create safe and welcoming environment. A space for people to build off of each other, grow, and make connections that lead to opportunities which are usually gatekept for anyone but a white cis man. The vision of Divas With Ideas is clear, create spaces where every person most importantly being those who are underserved, can show up as themselves and leave feeling seen.

Everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and safe while sharing their truth. I want to approach every interview and story with intention, empathy, and create a space people can tell their story without judgement.

I am on the road to becoming a journalist. I hope to share stories of those around me and those who wish to share their story. I want to have a focus in Pubic Health, however, I just want all the voices to be heard! If you have something that you want said please reach out and we can schedule an interview! Thanks for being apart of this journey:)
